The Last Word

Jonathan Halliday's word processor runs directly on Atari XL/XE. It offers 40- or 80-column display, file handling and extensive print formatting.

Writing on an 80-column screen

The Last Word starts from DOS. Version 3.21 displays 80 columns on a standard Atari and supports multiple documents with extra RAM. DOS XE is incompatible with this release because it uses memory under the operating system ROM.

Releases 3.21 and 3.3

The author offers releases including 3.21b and 3.3 Test 7 with VBXE support. Version 3.3 requires the VBXE driver from its own package and should not be combined with older editor extensions. The library's 2.1 manual describes an earlier version.

Saving and transferring text

In 3.21, Ctrl+S saves text, Ctrl+L loads it, and Shift+Ctrl+S saves under another name. Moving a document to a modern editor may require converting character encoding and line endings. A short text with Polish characters can help check the conversion.
