The smaller XL model
The 600XL has 16 KB RAM and a shorter case than the 800XL. It retains a full keyboard, HELP and START, SELECT and OPTION keys. Built-in Atari BASIC runs without a cartridge. The standard 16 KB accommodates short programs; software requiring 48 or 64 KB needs a memory upgrade.
BASIC and video outputs
Without a cartridge or boot disk, the computer starts BASIC. Holding OPTION at power-on disables the interpreter; if no boot program is found, it starts the system tests.
US 600XL versions have RF output. European PAL versions also have a monitor socket.
Atari 1064: upgrading to 64 KB
PBI, the Parallel Bus Interface, is behind the rear cover. The Atari 1064 module adds 48 KB RAM through this connector, increasing total memory to 64 KB. PBI exposes the computer's parallel bus; disk drives and cassette recorders still use the separate SIO connection. Some PBI devices, such as the TURBO FREEZER, require the 600XL to be upgraded to 64 KB first.
